Naturopathic medicine recognises and respects the inherent self-healing ability of the body. It views optimal health as something achieved at a cellular level and the onset of disease as the body’s response to internal and external stressors – such as environmental toxins, dietary imbalances, chronic stress or emotional strain – that has resulted in the accumulation of toxins, ultimately leading to weakened and fatigued cells. Overtime this may lead to cellular dysfunction and reduced resilience, which can manifest as illness.
Naturopathy seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than trying to eliminate or suppress symptoms. It draws on nutrition, lifestyle interventions and gentle therapeutic techniques to restore the vitality of an individual so that they can dispel disease by means of their own self-healing mechanism.
The practice of naturopathic medicine is guided by six fundamental principles:
Naturopathy views health not as the absence of disease but as a dynamic and resilient state of balance. At its core, naturopathic medicine is about working with the body – not against it. The emphasis is on prevention, individualised care, and restoring the conditions in which the body can thrive.
